Response to Neeru

This must happen in a lot of places, because a woman upstairs who emails me back and forth at work was telling me how some guy was fixing the copy machine next to her desk and he kept making nasty remarks and stuff to her and the people around her. She didn't do anything about it, but it makes no sense to think why would people come into a company and talk the way they do. I work for a very reputable and professional company and for people like him to come and talk like that is unacceptable. Same for where you work and in this day and age people definably need to watch what they say!!!

Something that defiantly has been an old tradition is the head of the table, which was always the man of the house. I think that it interesting that you state that because many times in every household this is set and people just never realize it. The man sitting at the head of the table is a symbol of power to him and others and this is such an old tradition. I don’t think that in today’s world it is seen as any status symbol, but it’s still kind of unique how it still goes on. I think it would be weird to see the kid sitting at the head of the table. It defiantly would need to get used to seeing that. It’s not so much a gender role anymore, but a habit that just is never ending. : )

I think that this is a very good example of how gender differences are in sports BUT I think that when this show was put on it was more prone to these kinds of circumstances. From my experiences I think that women are not as excluded now a days ad they were back then with the sports that tend to be all males. I think that the reason women were being excluded from all male sports sometimes because there bodies are not built like a mans body. I think that it was more of a protection for the women. Yes, I know plenty of women who can do just fine in rough sports, but really some don’t understand how rough men can get and how much damage they can do. I know plenty of guys also that think women can’t do sports that tend to be a males sport, but that’s just societies way so everyone follows it. I do think we are way further then we were when that show was on. Definitely more women are let into playing with the guys. Plus some girls seem to just want to prove guys wrong, but really your right if you have the passion and love for something you should do it other then that don’t!

Week Two

So, I had my Eureka moment while reading chapter 5 and it only happened 3 pages in while reading Language Defines Men and Women Differently. Before reading any further “For instance, coverage of women’s sports frequently focuses more on women athlete appearance than on their athletic skills” (Woods 119). This gave me the biggest sight of Serena Williams in Wimbledon when she wore this black outfit and all they kept talking about is what she was wearing and how it might b affecting her game, so on. The funny thing is that Venus and Maria Sharapova were both listed after as examples. It was not until this time that I thought wow these newscasters really do focus a lot of attention on what these women are wearing on court. So, I have been keeping my eyes open on the French Open that is on now I will be keeping some close tabs on what they are saying about the women these days. You really do never hear them talk about what they men are wearing either. This is really interesting and I never really though about it in this light. But all I think about is how they were so fixated on what Serena wears in these tournaments and I am sure the true tennis fans could care less!!!! I never really cared about it either, but now that I think about it more I am thinking about how many times I went to these tournaments and watched it on TV and all they can talk about is who looks good. The women that wear a normal outfit get no attention either. I can’t think as to if these women are wearing it for attention or for fashion? Any comments on this???
