Week 4

My Eureka moment of the week actually was over the weekend while I was doing my final project research. I watched a video I found on Youtube of President Obama and his equal pay legislation into affect. After watching to video and hearing Lilly Ledbetter I really was speechless. I had never realized how much employers discriminated against paying women an equal amount of money. I didn’t realize that not getting paid the same amount limits their pension funds and Social Security. All I could think about was her southern voice and talking about how she was not compensated for her hard work that was equal to her fellow males job. How could America be such a place to do such a thing? I still don’t understand this at all. And then another video I found was a women doing a “man’s job” while working on the new Yankee stadium. Well her words were “I am finally living the American Dream”. Every person should be living the American Dream from the day they are born. To be in your 30’s with kids and now only feeling like your living that dream is what dumb founded me. These two videos showed me how unfair we have been as a community to women. And to think Lilly could not be compensated for the $200,000 she lost in wages. I think this was horrendous and I am glad I worked n this project. I didn’t learn and realize as much now how badly equal pay has been. And to think it still is going on today. It’s only been 40 odd years since an equal pay act has been put into legislation and we, as a society still can’t compensate women equally. Is it just me or do not only women but men need to join forces in the help to stop inequalities between genders. To me I saw a different light and would do anything to get them where they need to be. A lot of men could care less, but sincerely after reading about this topic I had my Eureka moment!!

  1. Hi Chris,

I can’t believe what I’m reading. I unfortunately don’t have much time to keep up with television or the news. I always knew there was some pay discrimination but not like this. It’s sad to really step back and look at the inequality between men and women in our society. I think it’s a great idea that women and men join forces to conquer the unfairness between genders. What gets me is that before this class most of us didn’t even care or realize what was going on right under our noses for our entire lives.

  2. Chris,

I read your post and I also believe that this is outrageous. It's sad to think how long women have been treated poorly and unequally. It's been happening for so long in our history and it still occurs in today's society. While are there are those who are opposed to this type of behavior there are still those who practice it and condone this behavior for others, as they see nothing wrong with it. I also think this type of behavior has a great deal to do with the way people are raised. If someone sees this type of behavior throughout their childhood then it may play a great role when that person grows up. While I believe each gender should be treated equally, I'm sure there are those who will beg to differ.
